No excursions today. We decided to hit the beach and had a really fun day. Grabbed two really cold local beers off the pier at 0930 and jumped in a non-AC taxi van with 12 other people for a ride to Harbor Lights beach club. We found two beach chairs with an umbrella and settled in for the day. We spent $25 each to take a boat to an area immediately offshore to “swim with the turtles”. It was a shit show. Fortunately we didn’t spend that much and/or waste too much time. The men on the beach really hustled to fill the boat and miraculously nobody was injured as they brought a small boat into the surf, navigating around swimmers, and loading babies and elderly people onto a boat ladder bouncing up and down. Ironically, met a man and his son from Grand Rapids. The women of the family were shopping. Funny how many people we seem to meet from Michigan on the few cruises we have done. Of course it makes complete sense because even in mid-April it is probably in the 40s and raining most days.
The highlight of this port visit is depicted in the picture –Jenny’s Rum Shop. Instead of taking a taxi we decided to walk the 1.5 miles back to the ship. As we were walking back from the beach we noticed Jenny’s across the street. We popped in and it was something out of a movie. There were four people in the building filling five of the chairs. All locals. We ordered two beers from Jenny and were surprised when she started to give us change for a $5 bill. Ah — the real world. A man at the small bar asked if we were Canadian. We laughed and said “sure”, but then told him we were Americans. He immediately started talking about tariffs. He explained how the tariffs placed on China affected the overall price of beer production because apparently they get their beer bottles from China. He implied the local beer breweries would not be able to stay competitive and therefore stay in business. Can’t say we were able to easily follow his argument, but man was he passionate.
